Beneficiary: Mr. Chan, aged 77
Wish journey: March 24, 2018
It was the first life book project for the Foundation for our beneficiary. The booklet entitled “Leaving behind thousands of mountain peaks: looking back on my past eighty years” was published with the effort of our volunteers.
Mr. Chan achieved the top five in High School and was admitted to Peking University to study Chemistry.
However, his father’s business in Indonesia was burnt down. As a result, he could not even afford a train ticket to Beijing.
After he missed the chance, he was admitted by a local teacher’s College. Before long, the Japanese Invasion ruined his plan. He became a soldier and rose to lead hundreds of soldiers. He was oppressed during the Cultural Revolution.
At the age of 40, he finally met his Indonesian Chinese father for the first time. After that, the older man helped his son go to Hong Kong to make a living.
He had his own business yet failed in the end and worked for others. After his retirement, he returned to his hometown and was diagnosed with last stage lung cancer. Luckily, appropriate treatment was found when he came back to HK.
His dream was to leave his family with his life story. Our volunteers fulfilled his wish.
